Parques de Sintra is an exclusively publicly owned company, created in 2000, following UNESCO’s classification of Sintra’s Cultural Landscape as a World Heritage Site. In 2019, the areas under its management – Pena National Park and Palace, Sintra and Queluz National Palaces, Chalet of the Countess d’Edla, Moorish Castle, Monserrate Palace and Gardens, Capuchos Convent and Portuguese School of Equestrian Art – received around 3.7 million visits, 90% of which were by foreigners. It received, in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020, the World Travel Award for Best Company in Conservation and, in 2013 and 2018, the European Union’s Europa Nostra award in the Conservation category for the reconstruction projects of the Chalet of the Countess of Edla and the Botanical Garden of Queluz, respectively.
